Steve

Co-Host

Originally from Michigan, Steve graduated from East Lansing High School in 1990, where he was a debater, a baseball player, and a classical violinist.

After graduating high school, Steve attended Rice University in Houston, Texas for college. Steve's time at Rice was formative. He was a four-year member of the Rice University Student Honor Council and chaired the first meaningful revision of the University's revered Honor Code in over 50 years. When the school's President announced his departure, Steve was appointed as the sole undergraduate representative to the University's 13-member Presidential Search Committee. He was named one of the University's ten outstanding seniors at graduation.

Steve attended the University of Chicago Law School. He competed in the Hinton Moot Court Semifinals as a 2nd year, and served as one of the chairmen of the competition his 3rd year, succeeding future congresswoman Liz Cheney in that role.

Professional Career

During his 25-year career as a trial lawyer, Steve tried cases in courts across the country. He spent the last 22 years of his career as a partner at Kirkland & Ellis. His matters include serving as lead counsel to Syncora during the bankruptcy of the City of Detroit, overseeing the team that exonerated Charles Johnson from a life sentence for a crime he did not commit, and taking the GM Building back from Donald Trump. Steve retired from K&E in January 2023 to focus on his family and public service. Now retired, Steve is a part time lecturer on law at Loyola University in Chicago.
